Making A Hard Task Easier

Installing your own roof may at first appear to be a daunting project.  But with the proper preparation and by following basic roofing installation tips, your project may prove both doable and satisfying.  You don’t have to be a roofing contractor to get the job done.

What you do will vary depending on the kind of roofing material you choose for your home.  However, whether it’s rolled metal roofing, concrete roofing tiles, asphalt roofing shingles or other material, there are some roofing installation tips that are universal.

Regardless of the material, always follow the accompanying manufacturer’s instruction manual.  For most types of shingles, the instructions are normally included with each bundle.  A slow and methodical approach when following the instructions will reduce or eliminate mistakes.

A basic rule of roofing is to start the roofing at the edges of your roof and work your way to the middle.  The same goes for the felt application under the shingles.   The idea is to avoid walking over any of your roofing materials.  If you minimize stepping on your roof, you lessen the chance of compromising your roof.  Plus, walking over slightly wet felt paper (if it should get damp) can be a dangerous proposition and may ultimately cause you to slip and fall.

You should not take any shortcuts or skimp on roofing supplies either.  Under no circumstances should you avoid using felt paper or underlayment beneath your shingles.  Plus, when installing most roofing, avoid dampness of any kind.  Warm weather seasons are the best for roofing installation.  Trapped moisture, especially when using asphalt shingles, will not evaporate and may cause repeated expansion and contraction of shingles, thus shortening the effective life of your roof.

Another mistake to avoid is the use of shingle material in lieu of flashing.  This is a common error made as a cost-saving measure.  Metal flashing should always be used against anything that rises above the flat surface of the roof -- objects like chimneys, skylights, exhaust pipes and air conditioning condensers for example.

Avoid the purchase of cheap, run-of-the-mill roofing materials.  Take a look at some of the brands that offer rock-solid warranties like CertainTeed, GAF, Owens Corning and Tamko.

Following these and other roofing installation tips will in the long run help you save time and money.   However, if after contemplating a do-it-yourself roofing job you don’t feel comfortable, you should probably consider roofing contractors to install your roof for you.  The bottom line is that you want your roof to be installed correctly.  Even if you do not do it yourself, knowing a few of the no-nonsense roofing installation tips will help you be a more informed consumer.
